HISTORY

The Department of the Restorative Dentistry is one of the four departments that make up the Faculty of Dentistry and which came on board as a brand new department in 2004.  The department is previously headed by Dr. S.N. Maduako (2004 – 2005) Dr. C.I. Udoye (2005 – 2007 and 2010 till date) and Dr. (Mrs.) L. O. Okoye (2007 – 2010).

THEMISSION OF THE DEPARTMENT

Our mission is to enthrone excellence in teaching, learning and the practice of Restorative dentistry in a friendly environment, where the hunger to seek knowledge in all frontiers of dentistry prevails.  Our objectives are twofold, which are:

(i)                 to produce undergraduate students who have the requisite competence to provide excellent restorative care, and

(ii)               to produce specialists in Conservative Dentistry and Prosthodontics, with knowledge and skills for effective and efficient Restorative patient management.

The pattern of growth and development of the department, from inception to date, is encouraging.  Currently, there are two full time Senior Lecturers and two Visiting Senior Lecturers, six technologists and Admin staff who provide learning environment that encourages high standards, and performance of scholarly activities.  In all, teaching and learning are towards the provision of rational restorative dental care.

The Department mounts the following foundation preclinical courses in Dental Material Science, Operative technique, Prosthetic technique and simple Endodontics, while for clinical students, Operative dentistry, Prosthodontics (fixed and removable), Endodontics and Cosmetic dentistry are offered.  Furthermore, students are exposed to all contemporary Restorative treatment modalities.

In addition to their primary role, the lecturers double as consultants at the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH), where they render specialized Restorative dental care to patients and also, train doctors with a degree in dentistry in a wide variety of fields of Restorative Dentistry.  Despite these achievements, there are still room for improvement in the areas of academic staff needs, infrastructural facilities and equipment.

CURRICULUM AND ACADEMIC REGULATION

As the Faculty runs a non classified BDS degree programme, the department does not have an independent curriculum and academic regulation.

 GRANTS/ONGOING RESEARCHES

Though there are yet no departmental grants, currently there are ongoing researches by the academic staff and some with foreign collaborators.

 POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMME

There is no existing programme of such for now, and the departmental strategic plan is presently under development.
