 HISTORY
Department of Medical Microbiology was founded as a component of Faculty of Medicine of the Medical School, University of Nigeria Enugu Campus (UNEC). The Faculty was established in 1967. the department is a major part of the division of Pathology Sciences of the former Faculty of Medical Sciences & Dentistry, now Faculty of Medical Sciences.

The Department of Medical Microbiology took off in earnest immediately after the civil war. The department administratively operates as a single unit with two components, the teaching wing in the College of Medicine and the diagnostic wing under University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital (UNTH).

Department of Medical Microbiology is involved primarily in teaching, research and laboratory diagnosis. The department teaches 3rd MB,BS medical students medical microbiology. However, some of the lecturers are also involved in teaching and supervising students from the School of Medical Lab. Sciences; UNTH, B.Sc. Medical Lab. Sciences; Faculty of Health Sciences & Technology (FHST); Medical Residents in our department; Medical residents in Community Medicine and B.Sc. Nursing Students.

The department is also involved in routine diagnosis of specimens from different wards and clinics in UNTH. From 1990 about 1,000,000 specimens are processed and examined by the department annually.

Over the years, the academic staff of the department has carried out research work in many areas of medicine and has been involved in both local and international seminars, conferences and workshops.

The impact of the fire incident of November 3, 2003 has had terrible adverse effects on both teaching, research and laboratory services. The fire gutted and destroyed all research and teaching facilities, office equipment and records. The result of this has been the inability of the department to render services effectively. The restoration of these services would be positively enhanced by the provision of basic equipment, office and laboratory spaces by the managements of the college of Medicine and UNTH. Recently, new equipment has been acquired by the department.
