HISTORY
The Department of Surgery is one of the foundation departments of Faculty of Medical Sciences of College of Medicine, University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus and University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu (UNTH). The department trains undergraduate students for the Final MBBS degree, and also prepares postgraduate doctors for Fellowship of West African College of Surgeon (FWACS) and Fellowship of Medical College of Surgeons (FMCS) of National postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria.

Presently it has 19 full time Lecturer/consultants staff.

It offers services in the following disciplines:-

• General Surgery
• Paediatric surgery (Sub-Department)
• Orthopaedic surgery
• Cardiothoracic Surgery
• Urology
• Neurosurgery
• Plastic Surgery
• Accident & Emergency Surgery

The Department has its own Library and also makes use of Augustine Nnamani Library of Medicine and Arts of College of Medicine.

The Department of Surgery in UNTH has a large catchment area which includes Enugu, Anambra, Imo, Abia., Ebony, Rivers Bayelsa, Cross River Akwa Ibom, Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Abuja, Adam, Lagos and Delta States as well as some part of Cameroun.

The UNTH is designated a center of excellence for Cardiothoracic Surgery by the Federal Government, following consolidation of the pioneering works of the department which in 1974, successfully performed the 1st Open-Heart Surgery in Nigeria. In 1989 and 1993, the Department of Surgery also performed the 1st and 2nd successful separation of Conjoined twins in Nigeria.

The Department of Surgery is organized in subspecialty units. Each subspecialty is run by consultants who are academic staff of the University of Nigeria and Honorary Consultants to the Teaching Hospital.

The current Head of Department is Dr, O.E. Nwankwo, MBBS, DA, FMCS, (Orth), FICS and FWACS.

The Co-coordinator of postgraduate Training is Dr. K.A. Agu, MBBS, FWACS.

CURRICULUM FOR UNDERGRADUATES

Students start their surgical training from the 3rd year after passing the 2nd MMBBS and also spending 3 months in the introductory bulk postings in Pathology and Pharmacology. Their clinical rotations and lectures take place in bulks of postings lasting 6-8 weeks. There are 4 clinical postings in surgery, each of them targeted to inculcate particular attributes each of the skills on the students.

Surgery 1: 8 weeks – 2nd Semester 3rd year – Surgery in General with emphasis on history taken in the clerking of surgical patients.

Surgery 2: 8 weeks 1st semester 5th year – Surgery in general: emphasizing clerking of surgical patients and investigation.

Surgery 3: 6 weeks 1st Semester 6th year: Subspecialty posting in Surgery. Students rotate viz Urology, Paediatric Surgery, Orthopaedic, Cadiothoracic, Neuro Surgery and Plastic Surgery.

Surgery 4: 6 weeks 2nd Semester 6th year. General Surgery and special topics in Surgery.

During each surgical posting, students have didactic lectures early
in the Morning and then participate in clinical activities in the
hospital. Most teachings are done in the clinics, operating theatres
and bedside in the ward. Student’s clerk patients, make diagnosis
and outline their plan for investigation and treatment. They are

taught clinical skills and bedside manners. Students’ participation
in these programmes is ensured by the use of log books which
must be completed and signed before they are allowed to take the
final surgery examination. To ensure a minimum level of clinical
competence, a procedure book has been introduced to specify
the minimum number of each procedure each student must be
exposed to.
